THE OPEN SPACE COMMITTEE NEEDS YOU!

The Fremont Open Space Committee is a group of people who work together toward preserving the natural resources, wildlife habitat, open spaces and rural character of our town. Over the past few years, the Committee has actively worked to acquire the Glen Oakes Conservation Area, and is trying to promote public awareness of the importance of preserving open space.

We are looking for new people to come and see what our committee is about and to encourage you to offer your ideas, talents or knowledge. We have many upcoming projects that are in need of volunteers, such as monitoring programs for town forests, wildlife / bird / plant inventories; committee walks, showshoeing or cross country skiing, wildlife viewing, and more.  If any of these things interest you, we would like to hear from you. You can contact the Open Space Committee by email at openspace@fremont.nh.gov

or call one of our co-chairs: Janice O'Brien (603 679 5545) or Kenn Jones (603 679 5573).

FAVORITE FREMONT PLACES

Where are your favorite scenic and cultural/historical special places in Fremont?

As part of the ongoing revision of the Natural Resource Inventory section of the Master Plan, the Conservation Commission would like to know what your favorite scenic and cultural/historical places are. The information gathered in this survey will be included in a newly created Scenic Resource and Cultural Resource chapters of the Natural Resources Inventory that is currently being revised with the assistance of Rockingham Planning. Please email your favorite spots to fremontpz@comcast.net  We respectfully request that you do not include the following as scenic favorites, as they have already been clearly identified in a former survey: Martin Road, The view from the top of Beede Hill Road and Scribner Road. These will certainly be included in the inventory; we would like to know your other “favorite places” around town. Thank you for participating.

TOWN FOREST ORDINANCE

The Fremont Board of Selectmen and the Conservation Commission held public hearings on January 11, February 15, and March 22, 2007 to discuss adoption of a Town Forest Ordinance.
At the hearing on
March 22, 2007, with final amendments, the Ordinance was adopted.  It was placed on file with the Town Clerk on March 23, 2007.

GLEN
OAKES LAND
At this time, Glen Oakes Conservation Land is open to the public for all low impact recreational uses including bicycling, hiking, snowshoeing and cross country skiing on established trails. In addition, hunting as allowed by law is a permitted use.  Please be advised that motorized wheeled vehicles are not permitted within the Glen Oakes Conservation Land and that disturbance of the terrain is prohibited. Observance of the permitted uses only will insure that the land will remain in its present state for all future generations to come

GLEN OAKES

The Open Space Committee is in the beginning process of creating a Wildlife/Song Bird Inventory for the Glen Oakes Land. We are looking for volunteers to help with the field work for the study. If you have an interest in wildlife and/or song birds, this would be a great opportunity to get out onto the land and discover some of its hidden treasures! Please contact Janice O’Brien for more information or to volunteer at

 j-obrien@comcast.net or 679-5545.

Community Technical Assistance Program (CTAP) – Open Space Plan

The Open Space Committee  recently participated as an Open Space Task Force in a plan to develop strategies and recommendations for protection of open space.  The project was sponsored by the Community Technical Assistance Program (CTAP) as part of the I-93 improvement project and administered by staff of the Rockingham Planning Commission.

The members  participated in a series of  work sessions involving discussions of natural resource values, interpretation of maps, and development of land protection strategies and open space planning for the Town.

An Open Space Plan for the Town of Fremont was developed as a result of these meetings.
